In the 1940’s, Norwegians made and wore red pointed hats with a tassel as a form of visual protest against Nazi occupation of their country. Within two years, the Nazis made these protest hats illegal and punishable by law to wear, make, or distribute.

Minnesota-based yarn shop Needle & Skein has reimagined this design for this difficult moment in our history and is selling both a knit and crochet version of the pattern to raise funds for immigrant aid agencies.

Knitting Pattern available here. Pattern includes instructions for fingering, DK, and worsted weight versions.

Fresh restock! Let's keep the momentum going:

  • Cereza and Ravelry Red are Malabrigo Rios worsted weight yarns. 210 yards of superwash 100% merino wool per skein, enough to make close to two hats!
  • Red Rock (1315) is a light worsted weight yarn, by Blue Sky Fibers, whose Skyland yarn was used for the original Melt the Ice hat! Each skein has about 120 yards; you'll want to get two skeins to make sure you have enough yarn for one hat.
  • Red Rock (2315) is a fingering weight yarn, also by Blue Sky Fibers. A single ~200 yard skein should knit up 1 hat.
  • Routemaster is a slightly faded red 70% wool, 15% alpaca, and 15% luxurious blend by Rowan. 137 yard (50g) skeins, so 2 will ensure completion of 1 hat, and 3 might allow for making 2 hats.
  • We have a single skein of Urth yarn's luxurious kashmir mono left in red. 220 yards of fingering, subtly variegated cashmere yarn will knit up a very special hat for your favorite protestor.
